Fall in the White Mountains is a truly special experience—one that never ceases to amaze me, no matter how many times I visit. The air turns crisp and cool, the leaves burst into shades of red and gold, and there’s a comforting stillness everywhere you go. If you’ve never been to New Hampshire in autumn, Presidential Mountain Resort (PMR) is the perfect place to immerse yourself in the season.
This 48-hour itinerary is packed with the best fall activities, scenic drives, and local flavors, so you’ll have a weekend filled with mountain beauty, cozy fireside moments, and unforgettable memories.
Day 1 – Arrival & Sunset Colors
1:30 PM – Hike Mount Willard for a Breathtaking Fall Overlook
Trust me, Mount Willard is a fall gem that you have to see for yourself. It’s a moderate, 3.2-mile round-trip hike located right in the heart of the White Mountains, and the payoff at the top is incredible. The trail begins gently, weaving through a peaceful forest dotted with evergreens, birch, and maple. In the fall, the canopy above your head lights up with flashes of orange, yellow, and red, creating this warm, glowing tunnel effect.
About halfway up, you’ll start catching glimpses of the distant peaks through the trees—almost like little promises of what’s to come. Before you know it, you’ll reach a wide ledge with a jaw-dropping view of Crawford Notch below, covered in that famous New England fall foliage. It’s the kind of spot where you just want to sit on a rock and take it all in—maybe snap a photo or two, but mostly just soak up that quiet, overwhelming beauty.
3:30 PM – Scenic Drive Through Franconia Notch State Park
Once you’ve made your way down from Mount Willard, take the scenic route through Franconia Notch State Park. It’s one of those drives you could do 100 times and still find it captivating. Picture winding roads flanked by sheer cliffs, and forests ablaze with color on all sides. If you have a little extra time, pull over at The Flume Gorge, a natural rock chasm with wooden walkways and small waterfalls—absolutely stunning when framed by fall leaves.
Another stop you’ll love is The Basin, where centuries of rushing water have sculpted the granite into these smooth, swirling shapes. It’s quieter than some of the bigger attractions, but I think that just adds to its charm. Sometimes the leaves float gently on the surface, creating little pops of color on the water—perfect for photos or just a mindful moment of watching the water flow.
5:00 PM – Check-In at Presidential Mountain Resort
Now comes the cozy part. Arriving at PMR feels like stepping into a private mountain hideaway. The cabins are tucked among tall pines, each with its own little porch overlooking the woods. The air has that sweet scent of pine mixed with the crispness of autumn, and it’s so peaceful you’ll probably just want to stand still for a moment to take it all in.
Inside your cabin, you’ll find warm, wood-beamed ceilings, comfy furniture, and those extra touches like plush blankets and soft lighting. It’s a perfect blend of rustic vibes and modern amenities, so you can curl up with a good book or just rest after a day of exploring. Don’t be surprised if you find yourself thinking, “Okay, this is exactly what I needed.”
6:00 PM – Fireside S’mores Under the Stars
I can’t imagine a better way to end your first day here than gathering around the fire pit for fireside s’mores under the stars. It’s the perfect spot to unwind, toast marshmallows, and connect—with nature, your group, or maybe even a few fellow guests. There’s something timeless about the crackle of a shared fire, the gooey goodness of a classic s’more, and the kind of stargazing you just can’t get in the city.
Evenings in the White Mountains during autumn are crisp but not bone-chilling. I love how you can feel the faint warmth of the day lingering, while the cool night air starts to settle in. As you look up at the sky, you’ll notice so many stars—far more than you’d see back in any city. The crackling fire, the scent of wood smoke, and that glorious night sky overhead—that’s the stuff that makes you forget all about real-world stress.
Day 2 – Foliage, Scenic Drives & Small-Town Charm

8:00 AM – Breakfast at Polly’s Pancake Parlor
If you’ve never been, you’re in for a treat. Polly’s Pancake Parlor is practically an institution in the White Mountains, and fall is a perfect time to visit. The drive to Polly’s alone is scenic—rolling hills, farmland, and brilliant foliage along the way.
Inside this cozy spot, the sweet smell of pancakes and maple syrup welcomes you immediately. Their menu is all about homemade batter and fresh ingredients—choose from pumpkin, cornmeal, or whole wheat batter, and then watch them cook it up right in front of you. Pair it with locally sourced bacon or sausage, and you have a breakfast that will fuel you for another adventure-packed day.
9:30 AM – Kancamagus Highway – The Ultimate Foliage Drive
Next, head to the famous Kancamagus Highway—often called “The Kanc” by locals. It’s about 34.5 miles of pure autumn bliss, winding through the White Mountain National Forest. Every turn reveals something new: a blazing red hillside, a golden canopy above, or a river rushing alongside the road.
If you see a scenic overlook pullout, definitely stop. Some favorites include Hancock Overlook and Sabbaday Falls. The latter has a short trail leading to a magical waterfall, especially vibrant when surrounded by fiery-colored leaves. Keep your camera handy—this drive is a leaf-peeper’s dream come true.
3:00 PM – Explore the Charming Town of Littleton, NH
After soaking in all those views, make your way to Littleton, which might just be one of my favorite small towns in New England. The main street is lined with shops, boutiques, and old brick buildings that feel both timeless and welcoming.
Pop into Chutters if you’ve got a sweet tooth—it claims to have the longest candy counter in the world. Or, if you’re in a coffee mood, The Coffee Pot makes a mean pumpkin spice latte (not to mention their pastries are fantastic, too). And if you love browsing books, the Little Village Toy & Book Shop has a cozy selection to get lost in.
Littleton has this nice balance of a laid-back vibe with a dash of artsy flair. The locals are friendly, and there’s a small river walk you can stroll along behind the shops. Sometimes, especially in the fall, the entire scene feels like something out of a storybook.
7:00 PM – Dinner at Tall Provisions
Just down the road in Littleton, Tall Provisions offers a fresh take on mountain-town dining. This warm and inviting eatery—helmed by husband-and-wife team Adam and Lori Alderin—pairs chef-driven dishes with a laid-back vibe that feels both modern and grounded in place.
Inside, you’ll find exposed brick walls, candlelit tables, and a friendly, unpretentious atmosphere. The menu rotates regularly and reflects what’s seasonal and local, with each dish crafted to highlight technique, flavor, and fun. Whether you’re in the mood for a full dinner or a few shared small plates, you’ll find something to suit the moment.
It’s the kind of spot where locals gather, travelers feel welcome, and great conversation flows as easily as the wine. For a relaxing, flavorful end to your day in the mountains, this is your place.
Day 3 – Final Fall Adventures

9:00 AM – Ziplining at Bretton Woods
For a little morning excitement, ziplining at Bretton Woods is a must. High above the treetops, you’ll glide along nine separate ziplines connected by suspension bridges and platforms. Below, the forest glows with those iconic fall colors. There’s a sense of exhilaration mixed with admiration for Mother Nature’s handiwork—it’s a truly unique vantage point.
If you’re someone who loves a bit of adrenaline, this is going to be a highlight of your trip. Plus, you’ll have some incredible stories (and photos) to share when you get home.
11:00 AM – Last Stop: Sugarloaf Trail Hike
Before packing up and saying farewell to the mountains, consider squeezing in a quick hike on the Sugarloaf Trail. It’s roughly 2.6 miles and not too strenuous, but the views from the top are fantastic. You’ll see layers upon layers of forests in all their fall glory. It’s a peaceful, reflective way to cap off your weekend—quiet trails, scenic overlooks, and that satisfying feeling of having experienced the White Mountains at their finest.
